‘Gentleman’ George Monbiots Left Hook

Jan 23, 2011   //   by Nicholas Milton   //   Blog, Politics  //  No Comments

I’ve booked myself a ringside seat for the intellectual heavy weight contest of the year as fellow Guardian columnist George Monbiot takes on all comers at Warwick Art Centre on 16 February.I haven’t seen George in years so it will be good to catch up. If Ed West, a columnist with the Daily Telegraph, has his way George will be knocked for six regarding a recent column he wrote proposing that wealthy people rent out their spare rooms to ease the housing crisis. This resulted in a furious reaction from Ed whose column title was “Force the well-off to take a lodger. New year, new fascist-egalitarian proposal from the Guardian”.

Other memorable big hits over the last few years have included George’s  interview with the Chief Executive of the CPRE Shaun Spears over open cast coal mining. No doubt his run in with Hazel Blears and his attempts to arrest the former Prime Minister Tony Blair will also be thrown into the ring. My prediction for the fight is that it will go the full 12 rounds but George will win on points.
